1-54 Lounge Commission – New Davonhaime by Azikiwe Mohammed
The New Davonhaime project is an imaginary town-cum-safe space named after a linguistic amalgamation of the five American cities with the highest density of African-American residents, and its previous iterations have been exhibited throughout the US. As an extension of this project, Azikiwe Mohammed will be installing the first iteration of an outdoor-themed New Davonhaime space for this year’s 1-54 Lounge. Centering on the idea that physical spaces can be designed to nurture intellectual enrichment, Azikiwe Mohammed aims to create an installation that acts as a continuation of the visual landscape created by the 1-54 New York participating galleries and exhibited artists.
Azikiwe Mohammed has shown in galleries including but not limited to The Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMa PS1, The Knockdown Center and Pioneer Works, New York. He was the 2015 recipient of the Art Matters grant, and the 2016 recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist grant. He lives in New York and currently works at Mana Fine Arts, Jersey City.
