This year at the third edition of 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, 14 galleries are from Africa out of 38 exhibitors. This remarkable achievement is the result of dedication on the part of those working to build local art scenes in African countries, as well as the aim of 1:54 to engage in a conversation with cultural production and infrastructure on the continent.

1:54’s FORUM will focus on North Africa

This October, curator Koyo Kouoh will lead an inquisition into the discourse surrounding the Sahara. Considered an invisible border, the Sahara edges the distinct regions between the so-called ‘Maghreb’, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa; it is often imagined as a boundary and cultural divide between two artistic and intellectual cartographies rather than as a space of exchange.

Fresh from a successful New York debut earlier this year, 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair resumes its annual platform at Somerset House this October, 15–18, to unveil its most substantial showcase yet. Held across three elegant exhibition wings, 37 exhibitors have been selected to present the most rigorous and exciting works of over 150 contemporary artists from Africa and the African diaspora.
