Established in 2015, Thread is an artist residency and community hub located in Sinthian, a rural village in the Tambacounda region of Senegal. Thread’s ethos is guided by a principle Léopold Sédar Senghor, a poet and the founding president of Senegal, laid out: ‘culture is the beginning and end of development.’ Thread supports local and international artistic development alongside agricultural training, promoting collaboration between these communities and vocations. The open-plan building is designed by Toshiko Mori Architect and combines local building expertise and materials, such as bamboo, brick and thatch, with an innovative geometry. It won an AIA National Honors award and was shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Supported by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Thread is interested in the convergence of everyday rural endeavors with visual arts practice. Thread celebrates this crossover by presenting the results of quotidian creativity in Sinthian alongside work by contemporary artists who have visited Thread.
