1-54 Lounge: Shiraz Bayjoo – Indian Ocean Archive
Shiraz Bayjoo’s work explores legacies of European colonialism across the Indian Ocean region and beyond to the West. The lounge installation brings together an archive of photographs, paint-ings, ceramic sculptures, and videos into specially designed wooden vitrines and cabinets to create an immersive experience for visitors creating a small lagoon-like area focusing on a region off the coast of Africa that saw unparalleled forced movement of people through a complex and violent colonial history.
The work crosses over with Bayjoo’s latest body of work Searching for Libertalia, which will pre-view at the Casablanca Biennale later this year and at New Art Exchange, Nottingham. The project which has been developed with New Art Exchange sees a new video work and archival materials based around Madagascar and its 19th century and 20th century history under French imperial-ism.
