The themes of power and counter-power prevail in Kendell Geers’ work and are conveyed through metaphorical representations of violence, religion, spirituality, morality, discipline and fear. Geers further disrupts commonly accepted moral codes and principles by uncovering the limits of the main vector of thought: language. Drawing on a wide range of references—ranging from art history, pornography, kitsch and iconography—Geers interrogates the notions of artistic value and originality. Laden with humorous undertones, his work ridicules racial prejudices and religious stereotypes. His use of language, ready-mades, neon, icons, films and other materials and objects startle the viewer and encourage a degree of interrogation. Geers’ work has recently been exhibited at documenta 14, Kassel (2017).
